So given those choices that I didn’t make, here’s my transcription equipment:

A Sennheiser ME 3-II headmic with cardioid capsule. This microphone has a metal frame that fits over your ears for stability but does not block your hearing. The frame anchors the adjustable microphone head in front of your mouth. The microphone has what they call a cardioid pickup pattern, meaning sound in one direction is amplified while sound in other directions is reduced or eliminated. If I wore the mic and we had a conversation, the mic would pick up only my voice—perhaps even if you shouted! I have dictated a story while sitting fifty yards from a concert, and none of the music could be heard in the recording. So this microphone is more than sufficient for eliminating road and traffic noise as I dictate. (I learned about the Sennheiser ME 3-II from the support forum at KnowBrainer.com, a company that sells speech-recognition hardware and software.)

An Olympus Digital Voice Recorder WS-853. This satisfies my requirements for physical, tactile buttons. (As a bonus, the recorder makes sounds when the buttons are pushed, so I don’t have to guess.) It also has a USB plug, allowing me to easily copy files to my computer (and to recharge the battery); and it has an audio output jack, allowing me to plug it into the AUX port of my Jeep’s stereo so I can listen as I dictate.
